ブラインド・ウィリー・ジョンスンは盲目のシンガー／ギタリスト。1928年から30年までに5回のレコーディング・セッションで29タイトル、30曲を遺しているが、歌詞はすべて宗教的なものである。

彼の生涯については、サミュエル・チャーターズ (Samuel B. Charters) が1950年代に行ったリサーチ (著書 "The Country Blues" および Folkwaysで復刻されたレコードの解説)によるところが大きいが、これによるミスリードと思われる部分も多々ある。

ブラインド・ウィリー・ジョンスンの出生年月日については諸説あるが、有力のものとしてはAngilina Johnsonの署名のある死亡証明書、これには1897年01月22日テキサス州インディペンデンス生まれ、父はウィリー・ジョンスン・シニア (ミシシッピ生まれ)、母はメアリー・フィールズ (テキサス州ムーディ生まれ)と記載されているという (Jas Obrecht著 "Early Blues: The First Stars of Blues Guitar")。
BluesImages発行の"Classic Blues Artwork from the 1920's Vol.15 : 2018 Calendar"もこれにしたがったものと思われる (このシリーズでも彼の生年月日、死亡年月日が登載されたのが2012年版のVol.12から)。

ジョンソンの目が見えなくなった原因は、彼が7歳のとき、父の再婚相手の女性が浮気をして父から殴られた腹いせに、ゆで汁入りの鍋 (a pan of lye water) をジョンスンの顔面に投げつけたためだという。

コロンビア・レコードがフランク・ウォーカー率いる録音班をはじめてテキサス州ダラスに派遣したのが1927年12月、このときにブラインド・ウィリー・ジョンスンは発見(?)され、1927年12月03日に初めての録音で6曲を吹き込んだ。その後1928年にもダラスで1回、1929年にはニュー・オーリンズで2回、1930年にはアトランタで1回、合計5回のセッションで29タイトル、30曲が遺されている。

このうち3回のセッションで女性ヴォーカルを伴っていますが、DIXON & GODRICH編"BLUES & GOSPEL RECORDS 1902-1943" [1982発行] では、その女性をAngeline Johnsonとしていますが、米Columbia(LEGACY)がROOTS N' BLUESシリーズの一環として編された全曲集"THE COMPLETE BLIND WILLIE JOHNSON"の解説では、1928年の録音はAngeline Johnson、1929，30年の録音はWillie B. Harrisとしている(ただし、解説を担当したサミュエル・チャーターズは、実際にAngeline Johnsonに取材もしているが、28年の録音もWillie B. Harrisの可能性が高いとしている)。さらに新版"BLUES AND GOSPEL RECORDS 1890-1943" [1997発行] では、Willie B. Richardsonと改められた。
Willie B. HarrisとWillie B. Richardsonは同一人であり、ジョンスンの最初の妻で、1977年にダン・ウィリアムズが調査の際に発見(?)した女性。
一方、Angeline Johnsonは前述のとおりチャーターズが1953年に発見(?)した女性でジョンスンの二番目の妻。彼が亡くなるまで生活を共にした。
どちらの女性とも正式には結婚ではなかったようだ。
